Lambretta AF Rayspeed 5 Speed Close Ratio Gearbox 35 Tooth 5th Gear
AF's Clo5e Close Ratio Gearbox (35 Tooth 5th Gear)
This is the standard version of their 5 speed gearbox.
5-speed gearbox for engines of the Lambretta models. The perfect update for all purposes.
It is an old wish of all manual scooter riders to have one gear more than the classic 4-speed gearboxes can offer. Tuned engines in particular are often unable to call up their full power or put it on the road because the jumps between the individual gears are too large and the optimum speed range is no longer available after shifting. Closer-ratio gearboxes provide a remedy here. In the Lambretta sector these are called "pacemakers" or "close ratios". These gearboxes solve the problem of the large jumps between the gears and help to achieve a good connection to the correct speed range in the next gear, but reduce the speed range that such a gearbox covers or in which it works. Depending on the primary ratio, either the top speed or the starting speed is reduced.
- Better gear connection
- Lower revs on long journeys
- "zippier" starting at traffic lights
Modern 5-speed transmissions solve the problem. The gears are spaced close enough that there are no more problems with perfect gear connection. At the same time, the 5 gears cover the speed ranges between the first and last gear of an original gearbox. Depending on the manufacturer, the gear spread is wider than in most original gearboxes or as small as in sporty gearboxes. The former make it possible to continue driving briskly at traffic lights without burning the clutch, while at the same time cruising speed on the motorway can be achieved at comfortable revs. The latter are ideal for use on the racetrack.
The ratios are 1st (10 - 45), 2nd (13 - 41) 3rd (16 - 38), 4th (18 - 36), 5th (19 - 35).
If set up with 18 - 47 sprockets it will have the following drive ratios, 11.75, 8.24, 6.20, 5.22, 4.81.
This versions very close 4th and 5th makes it ideal for when your speed is often dictated by other riders. i.e. if you are riding at 50mph on a bike capable of 85 - 90mph you'll usually find 4th to tall and the bike chugs, but 3rd is screaming at the upper part of its rev range.
