Pinasco is one of the few manufacturers to offer tuning cylinders for the early Vespa large-frame rotary vane engines with only two overflow channels in the engine housing. These were first used by Piaggio in the Vespa VNB in 1959 and continued to be used in the basic concept well into the 1970s. With the Sprint Veloce came the so-called three-channel flushing, a further overcurrent channel which additionally supports the now already used reverse flushing. All well-known manufacturers of tuning cylinders have designed their cylinders for these engine housings with three overflow channels. If you try to build such a three-channel cylinder on a two-channel engine housing, you will find that the new third channel is in the open. Without modifications to the engine housing there is little to do.
Pinasco offers two different cylinders for these engines.
These differ both in the material (aluminium or grey cast iron) and in the conception.
Grey cast iron
The grey cast iron cylinder has tame steering angles and is therefore ideal as a replacement for the mostly worn and tired original cylinder. The performance is not high in absolute terms and compared to today's standards, but in relation to the performance of the original engine it is still remarkable. The grey cast iron Pinasco trumps with a wide power band and solid torque that it draws from the displacement.
However, the following things must be considered urgently so that the cylinder has a long life: The carburetor and ignition settings must be adjusted. Depending on the year of manufacture of the basic engine, it has up to 28° pre-ignition. This must be reduced to 20°v.Ot. Also the carburettor is often quite crude due to the still often used nosepiston technology. A conversion to a SI20/20D or SI24/24E carburettor of the PX models is to be regarded as absolutely meaningful here.
The kit does not require special technical knowledge to be assembled and easily adapts to all Vespa from 125 to 150, 3-4 gears without the need for specific processing. The technical characteristics of this cylinder are a considerable torque and reduced consumption, the cast iron used of excellent quality is machined in such a way as to significantly reduce internal friction giving the engine fluidity, reliability and resistance.
Note: The piston clearance of the Pinasco grey cast iron cylinders is usually very narrow ex works (between 5-8/100mm). For maximum operating safety, the running clearance should be measured and adjusted if necessary (10-12/100mm).
